On Sunday, August 10th, I volunteered as an assistant to NPS Ranger, Julia Clebsch, who led a beginning shorebird walk at the Jamaica Bay East Pond. Julia did a short presentation on shorebirds and then we headed out. Among the birds we saw included, Canadian Geese, Swans, Double Breasted Cormorants, Gulls, Semi-Palmated Sandpipers, Short Bill Dowitchers, Black Crowned Night Heron, Glossy Ibis, Lesser Yellow-Legs, Greater Yellow-Legs and Least Sandpipers. Unfortunately, there was no sign of the Red-necked stint or Sharp-tailed sandpiper that were reported earlier in the week.
Shorebird watching is very new to me…I only started this year and there is much to learn. On the 24th, I will be volunteering at the annual Shorebird festival and so I hope to pick up a lot of tips from the many birding experts that will be there. Here are some pictures from the walk.
